Opportunities for Older Adults

The Opportunities for Older Adults program (OOA) takes great pride in providing services to older adults with developmental disabilities. These individuals have chosen to retire and wish to experience activities commonly valued by senior citizens.

The OOA program is located in downtown Meriden within walking distance from the Meriden Senior Center, local restaurants, coffee shops, court house, art gallery and book store. Outside the program is a scenic garden area where the individuals plant flowers and vegetables. You may sit on the patio and enjoy nature or just people watch.

Upon entering the area, you will notice the spacious rooms, including a sewing room, arts & crafts area, relaxation room,  game room and kitchen. Just like home, everyone tends to congregate in the kitchen.

The individuals can choose to be very active or enjoy a more laid back atmosphere. The individuals usually meet in the kitchen for coffee and then proceed to any number of activities including: cooking, baking, sewing, planting, bingo, puzzles, games, arts & crafts, theme/holiday parties and quilt making. Several times a year, the individuals host an arts & crafts show. The show includes a bake sale. Individuals may sell the crafts they made on their own or work at selling the crafts at the booth or the food made at the program.

Each month the individuals create a community activity calendar for the next month's activities. One or two activities are scheduled each day. These activities have included: restaurants, train rides, GHO, miniature golf, bowling, coffee shops, library, picnics, shopping, Mystic Aquarium, radio stations, New York City, Science Museum, Oakdale Shows and more…

The OOA program operates “Helping Hands.” This is a volunteer activity that provides shopping to shut-ins in the Meriden and Wallingford areas.

Highly trained staff provide assistance with personal needs, adult daily living skills, medical needs including medication administration, future dream building and person centered planning, personal relationship building, self-advocacy, advocacy and behavioral management.
